The right Lineage 2 server can give you months of fun; the wrong one wipes in two weeks. Before you commit your time, run through this checklist.

1. Chronicle

Decide the version first — it defines everything. See our chronicles guide if you are unsure.

2. Rates

XP/SP and drop rates set the pace. Low rate (x1–x10) = slow, social, long-term. Mid rate (x15–x100) = the sweet spot for most players. High rate (x1000+) = instant gear, pure PvP. Match the rate to how much time you have.

3. PvP vs PvE

Custom PvP servers throw you into fights fast; retail-like servers reward farming, sieges and economy. Neither is "better" — pick what you enjoy.

4. Files: L2J vs L2OFF

L2OFF uses the original NCSoft files (most authentic, fewer bugs); L2J is the open-source Java emulator (more custom features, occasional quirks). Both can be excellent — check reviews.

5. Population & stability

A healthy population is everything in an MMO. Check the server's rank and votes on the toplist, look at its wipe history, and avoid servers that reset every month unless you like fresh starts.

6. Read reviews and vote

Player reviews reveal donation balance, GM activity and bugs. When you find a server you like, vote for it daily — it keeps good servers visible for everyone.

FAQ

What rate is best for a new player?

Mid-rate (x25–x50) is the most beginner-friendly balance of speed and content.

Is L2OFF better than L2J?

Not inherently — L2OFF is more authentic, L2J is more customisable. Server quality matters more than the files.

How do I know if a server is active?

Check its position and vote count on the toplist and recent player reviews before committing.
